Sympathetic refurbishment of a Grade II listed house in Frome

This once derelict Grade II listed building has undergone a full refurbishment and has been transformed into a family home, now providing four bedrooms, two bathrooms, kitchen and living room, with a modern extension due next year.

The building had fallen into complete disrepair and required full restoration, including a new roof, new windows, structural works, replacement of rotting timbers, bathrooms, kitchens and insertion of modern services.

The approach to the restoration project was to carefully preserve and restore original period features of the home and work with materials that are sympathetic to its heritage. Breathable wood fibre was used to insulate the new roof with new internal walls finished in a breathable hemp plaster. The concrete render was removed from the main elevations and the original stonework restored with a traditional lime mortar. Windows and doors were retained and restored wherever possible, with new casements made locally and like for like to their original intent.

This project stands as a testament to our clients unwavering commitment to stay true to the features of the original building, harmoniously merging history with modern family life.

The result…a truly beautiful palimpsest that lays bare the buildings rich heritage, whilst giving it a new lease of life and creating a warm and inviting home, where stories of its past are both abundant and intriguing. This is remarkable example of how an old derelict building can be brought back to life and made fit for modern living, without losing any of its original character. We have been blessed to be a part of its restoration
